Vampires are legendary creatures said to subsist by feeding on the life essence of living creatures, generally by drinking their blood. Although typically described as undead, some minor traditions believed in vampires that were living people.[1][2][3]
In folkloric tales, vampires often visited loved ones and caused mischief or deaths in the neighbourhoods they inhabited when they were alive. They wore shrouds and were often described as bloated and of ruddy or dark countenance. This is markedly different from modern fictional portrayals of gaunt, pale vampires beginning in the early 19th century. Although vampiric entities have been recorded in many cultures, the term vampire was not popularised until the early 18th century, after an influx of vampire superstition into Western Europe from areas where vampire legends were frequent, such as the Balkans and Eastern Europe,[4] although local variants were also known by different names, such as vampir (вампир) in Serbia and Bulgaria, vrykolakas in Greece and strigoi in Romania. This increased level of vampire superstition in Europe led to mass hysteria and in some cases resulted in corpses actually being staked and people being accused of vampirism.
In modern times, the vampire is generally held to be a fictitious entity, although belief in related creatures such as the chupacabra still persists in some cultures. Early folkloric belief in vampires has been ascribed to ignorance about the process of decomposition after death among pre-industrial societies. Porphyria was also linked with legends of vampirism in the 20th century and received much media exposure, but this link has since been largely discredited.
The charismatic and sophisticated vampire of modern fiction was born in 1819 with the publication of The Vampyre by John Polidori. The story was highly successful and arguably the most influential vampire work of the early 19th century.[5] However, it is Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula that is remembered as the quintessential vampire novel and which provided the basis of modern vampire fiction. The success of this book spawned a distinctive vampire genre, still popular in the 21st century, with books, films, video games, and television shows. The vampire is a dominant figure in the horror genre.

Vampire Legends from around the World
This is a "sampler" of vampire legends from around the world.
Asanbosam:
African. Asanbosam are normal vampires except that they have hooks instead of feet. They tend to bite their victims on the thumb.
Baital:
Indian. These vampires natural form is that of a half-man, half-bat creature roughly four feet tall. They are otherwise unremarkable.
Bajang:
Malaysian. The bajang normally take the form of polecats. They could be enslaved by sorcerors and forced to kill the sorceror's enemies, and some families were believed to be hereditarily stalked by the bajang.
Baobhan Sith:
Scottish. The baobhan sith (pronounced buh-van she) are evil fairys who appear as beautiful young women and will dance with men they find until the men are exhausted, and then feed on them. The baobhan sith can be harmed and destroyed by cold iron.
Callicantzaros:
Ancient Greece. According to Greek legend, a child born on Christmas will become a allicantzaros.

Ch'ing Shih:
Chinese. Ch'ing shih appear livid and may kill with poisonous breath in addition to draining blood. If a Ch'ing Shih encounters a pile of rice, it must count the grains before it can pass the pile. I find it amuseing how a film assumes what we are. We can walk in sunlight and we are most certaintly not cold. I turned back in 1974, we cannot live for hundreds of years but maybe abit longer than your avarage person due to our hunger for blood. We just have a fetish for blood and love to drink it. I mean how comes that we/this all exist. Where did it all come from in the first place?) and everything "seeming" unnatural or supernatural could be explained, humans just did not found out yet (SO WE ALL STAY IN THE DARK WAITING TO SEE THE LIGTH OR TO BE LIGTHENED OR UNTILL WE COULD BUILD A TORCH OUERSELFS? SURE!). ALL or NOTHING? That is it? After those 2 THOUGTHs I just wanted to find something more, something in the middle!The last THOUGHT is: (very much a mix of thougths fitted together and very crazy!!!) Some of the supernatural exists or existed, but either got weaker, is dying or died out. Or (more crazy) built a world parallel to ours, were some of them life. Just now and then they would give the humans a little excitement or ideas through showing something (this is suppost to be not very common) or (more common) putting stuff in minds, appear in dreams, visions, or nearly death experiences. Some "supernaturals" would be able to keep a watch on humans (like humans watching TV) and some could intervene/influence human lifes in good or bad ways (like we play computer games for example "The Sims", that sounds creepy! I am sure not all of us try to be nice with the "Sims" in the game!).Personal I don't know what to believe, but if I would only know for sure that Vampires like Edward in Twiligth do exist or Vampires at all (anything supernatural) I would not tell anyone, anywhere or anytime (as sorry for other as i migth be, for no price could this be pryed out of me, it would stay secret on whose account, for your sake and for my own).Before beeing Vampire I would have the request, wish, desire, and demand for love of the same strong bond as between Edward and Bella (or stronger if possible) that it lasts eternity, continually for ever and for good. This person as a matter of course would have to be a Vampire with me together. Without love of such bond (so strong that losing the other person is the worst that can happen to both) there is no wish in me for life of eternity.3. THE LAST THEORY: Lost felicitousness!So "Cold Ones" if out there, without such love, after many years, decades or even centuries, how can one be made happy or satisfied? Answer: Impossible! As Years go by, after a very long time, many decades, when all is said and done, eventually, you try to take your own life.After all, you greet death, like a first met parent, and "take its hand" to follow. You ask how these myths came to be if they don't exsist. This is easily answered: people in the days before us did not know what we know today and were very.... superstitious. Also quite a few of them could have come up with these stories from drugs, they did exsist in those days too, they're not some recent new discovery. Yes every culture has these myths, but they are not real vampires. In Aztec and Maya they had their "gods" that seemed like vampires, but they were probably just a product of wars and all the bloodshed that happened or if a person went missing; they could have been killed and eaten by an animal. There are logical reasons to all of these "myths" and how they came about. I'm not a scientist and i'm not the type of person that thinks that everything is science and there is no god or anything like that. I believe in many things; I believe in god and I am part Catholic part Wiccan part Buddhist among many other religions. But it's just plain common sense that vampires don't exsist. I will never believe they exsist until someone proves it to me IN PERSON. Pictures can be photoshopped people, you can't believe everything you hear or see just because the idea of it appeals to you. I have an open mind, I'm just not crazy like a lot of you seem to be. Oh and one more thing; why are people posting stuff in a different language when this is in english? WTF. After sometime, she started to kill young girls in her area, so that she could preserve her youth and beauty by bathing in their blood. The rumored number that had been killed was 600. She was sealed alive in a chamber and could only get food and water through a slot in the door. She died there as well. The vampire itself in myths sometimes didnt even require the sustenance of people. In Japan, the vampires (called Kappas) would dwell in water. They also attacked livestock such as cows and horses, dragging them into the water, and devouring them. So you see, even if the culture is somewhat different than the western one, there are myths that pertain to the Vampire in different cultures. And the vampire can be as different in one form, as well as another. Which may be rather odd, but the myths themselves are as different, as night and day. And are also very unique as well too.
